Something is happening at Southend-on-Se, a resort town in Essex 40 miles east of London. A gaggle of style-over-substance bands are springing up from this dot on the map all stemming from the now defunct Junk Club. The Horrors are the most visible of this loose-knit social circle, but includes many others like Ipso Facto, Neils Children, Electricity in our Homes, The Violets, and These New Puritans. They tend to fancy a heavy Victorian goth aesthetic and those bowl cut hairstyles that the Brits love so much. Musically you can tell they are for the most part influenced by the garage rock of The Monks and the 13th Floor Elevators and the more cartoonish over the top styling of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and obviously The Cramps.
