Retro Kidz
October 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Fashion goes in circles, everything old is new again etc. etc.
Meet the Retro Kidz, a bunch of youngsters who have a total crush on the late 80s early 90s. Besides the fact that their music is horrendous, all styler over substance, and bears no resemblance to the music of the era they love so much, this is one trend that I can whole heartily get behind.
I have a soft spot for the early 90s. I think I’m going to dust of my British Knights, strap on my 8-ball jacket, and watch the Love Connection tonight.

Vladimir Petrovich Demikhov
October 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Far behind the Iron Curtain of cold war Russia Vladimir Demikhov was a pioneer in what he coined “transplantology”. He dealt in the transplants of organs and limbs in various animals. In 1954 he created his most notorious work. He grafted the head and forelegs of a puppy to the neck of an adult dog. With their windpipe and blood vessel’s connected this dog lived for 6 days with the puppy head displaying the behavior of a puppy and the adult dog displaying the behavior of an adult.
Christiaan Barnard who performed the world first human heart transplant cited Demikhov as one of his mentors.

Rarely does a trailer make me want to see a film. I saw this trailer yesterday and immediately I knew I wanted to see it even though I didn’t know what the movie was about. The complete absence of Hollywood glam and soundtracking coupled with every shot beeing in natural light really appeals to me.
I did some poking around and here is what the movie is actually about:
“In the cold, winter light of a rural Mississippi Delta township, a man’s suicide radically transforms three characters’ lives and throws off-balance what has long been a static arrangement among them. Marlee is a single mother struggling to scratch a living for herself and James, her 12-year-old son, who has begun to stumble under drug and violence pressures. So when the opportunity to seek safe harbor at a new home arises, she grabs it, though the property is shared by Lawrence, a man with whom Marlee has feuded bitterly since James’s birth.”

Adult. is a band that makes claustrophobic, cold, synth heavy, “electroclash”, “cold-wave” ,whatever you want to call it music. Now, they’ve made a movie; a campy horror one from the looks of it. I like how it is a logical extension of Nicola Kuperus’ (one half of the band) no faced, highly staged photography.
There will be a screening of their film in Los Angeles on Nov. 18th at the Silent Movie Theatre. Adult. will be performing the soundtrack live to the film.

Bdelloid Rotifers

“Bdelloid Rotifers — small transparent animals that live in damp places such as puddles, or patches of moss. Among evolutionists, these animals have something of a cult following, because they have a lifestyle that is not supposed to exist. As far as anyone can tell, the bdelloid rotifers are ancient asexuals: they appear to have been living entirely without sex for more than 85 million years. And each time we learn more details of their lifestyle, the wackier it becomes.”
