AMNH: Picturing the Museum
June 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The American Museum of Natural History is easily one of my favorite museums. Now they have launched a website featuring photos spanning from the late 19th to the late 20th Century that were culled from their pictorial archives.

absence of water

“In the Thirties London’s outdoor public pools were at the peak of their popularity. Gradually tastes have changed, resulting in a drop in attendances, leaving the pools uneconomical to run. Many fell into decay and many were demolished. Only a handful of pools remain today as a symbol of a bygone era.”

The Screamers
June 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Screamers are perhaps the best band to never release a record. Formed in 1977, they were one of Los Angeles’ first punk bands. What made them so special is that they abandoned guitars for synthesizers which was unique for a punk band then. Nobody really knows why they didn’t release a record. Some say they were holding out for a big record label contract, or that their constant line-up changes hindered them from going into a studio. The only recorded material of theirs is some live recordings and demos. Their lead singer, Tomata du Plenty died in 2000 ensuring that they would never be able to release a proper “studio album”
I would love to see how the music scene of southern California would be different today, had they gotten the exposure of their guitar driven peers, The Germs.
The Screamers – The Beat Goes On
The Screamers – 122 Hours of Fear
The Screamers – Punish or be Damned

Joy Division Zune
June 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Microsoft is releasing a Joy Division Zune this week.
ugg.
With 3 movies released about the band (one coming preloaded on the Zune) in the last few years; who knew that one of the godfathers of “goth” would be so marketable.

I think I’ll strap on my Joy Division New Balance sneakers and go for a run now.

Etude Records

I’ve really been enjoying the catalog of Etude Records lately. Billing themselves as a label devoted to “experimental and obscure sound archives” their releases and overall aesthetic are stellar.
